Vacation time shrinks while logistics costs rise. Children experience curated digital environments that flatten local distinction—the playground in their town looks interchangeable with any other. Schools and activity calendars splinter family time into transactions rather than shared rhythms. Yet simultaneously, locality has become economically legible: communities invest in walking trails, heritage markers, and local food systems. The tension is not between having free time and not having it—many families do—but between time-at-home that restores nothing and time-at-home that becomes generative.
