That stream is alive—it accumulates friction, grows dependencies, creates bottlenecks that consume energy without producing value. The system is rarely stagnating entirely; more often it’s partially blocked—some parts flow freely while others are congested, invisible, or misaligned with what actually matters. People feel this as exhaustion without corresponding output. In domains spanning knowledge work to direct service, the same pattern emerges: activities accumulate like silt in a riverbed. What makes this pattern necessary now is that the stream is no longer simple. It crosses boundaries between tools, people, and contexts. Step 3: Quantify time and identify waiting. Mark how long each step takes and how long work waits between steps. Waiting time often exceeds active time by 5:1 or worse. Step 4: Identify activities that create no customer value. Walk each step and ask: would the person receiving this output miss it if we removed it? Batch similar work (can we process five cases at once rather than one at a time?).
