Deep work has fractured. Knowledge systems have organized themselves into increasingly specialized silos—disciplines, departments, technical stacks, policy verticals. Each silo produces depth: domain experts who can optimize within their boundaries. But the system itself grows brittle. Climate policy ignores supply-chain architecture. Product teams build features without understanding user ecosystem effects. Movement organizers miss the structural patterns that repeat across campaigns.
AI accelerates this fragmentation even as it offers escape routes. Machine learning excels at pattern-matching within constrained domains: medical imaging, legal contract review, code generation, financial forecasting. Specialized AI compounds specialized humans. The economic logic is clear: hire the expert or buy the tool.
What fractures under this pressure is integration—the capacity to see how a decision in one domain ripples into another, to ask “what are we not seeing because we’ve organized ourselves this way?” These questions live in the spaces between specialisms.
