Individuals contribute insights, drafts, frameworks, and revisions—yet final outputs obscure who thought what, who built on whose work, and where genuine synthesis occurred versus surface assembly. In organizations, this manifests as ghostwritten reports where intellectual labour disappears into branded outputs. In public service, policy documents carry no lineage of deliberation, making it impossible to trace which stakeholder shaped which decision. Activist movements lose institutional memory when contributions dissolve into collective statements. Tech teams ship products where the conceptual design, implementation choices, and user research threads tangle together irretrievably. The system stagnates because individuals stop investing genuine creative energy—why refine an idea if your fingerprint will vanish? Meanwhile, the collaborative potential atrophies: without visibility into how others think, teams cannot learn from each other’s reasoning. The real breakage: When practice drowns co, people experience authorship as loss. Activists resent that collective statements flatten their specific analysis.   2. The thinking moves (the questions posed, tensions held, evidence integrated, frameworks tested)

Third, and crucially, the practice itself becomes learnable. In tech teams, embed this in pull request practices: each significant change includes a brief note on the thinking move it represents. In public service, maintain a “policy deliberation log” that tracks which stakeholder perspectives shaped which recommendations. This isn’t a burdensome addition—it replaces vague meeting notes with precise intellectual genealogy.

Define attribution as “contribution to thinking,” not just “wrote words.” In most co-authored work, attribution collapses into author lists. But there’s a decay risk: AI can obscure contribution paths. If a language model generates the final prose, can you still map who thought what? Attribution becomes murky. Was that insight the researcher’s reasoning, the engineer’s implementation wisdom, or the model’s statistical inference? The practice demands evolution: teams must implement AI contribution mapping—explicitly documenting where machine intelligence participated and how. In tech products, this might mean: “User pain point identified by research team; feature concept emerged from human-AI brainstorm; implementation optimised through ML; user testing shaped by Design team working with AI-generated prototypes.”

The cognitive era also surfaces a new leverage point: distributed authorship at scale. Traditionally, co-authorship caps out at 10–20 people; larger groups fragment. AI-assisted contribution mapping could enable genuine co-authorship across hundreds of contributors—each thinking path stays visible, integration happens algorithmically at first, then human deliberation refines. This is speculative but visible in open-source documentation and distributed science projects.

The risk: AI-mediated co-authorship could become a simulation of collaboration—a system that produces outputs labelled “co-authored” while the actual thinking happens inside the model, invisible. Outputs feel integrated: readers sense multiple intelligences at work, not assembled pieces. New team members learn the intellectual architecture faster because thinking paths are visible.

Attribution becomes political: names added to smooth hierarchy or remove controversy, not to reflect actual thinking. Replant the practice when you notice resentment about attribution or when team members report feeling their ideas were “stolen” or disappeared. This signals the practice has become hollow. The right moment is after completing one significant co-authored cycle; gather the team and audit what actually enabled good thinking together versus what created friction or invisibility.
